, or trade with foreign nations across the Pacific lured farmers, adventurers, and merchants alike. But most emigrants, mostly Americans, believed in Manifest Destiny. Which means that the nation wanted to spread towards the west by the Pacific.
Latecomers to the Midwest wanted to set their sights on Oregon and California even though they were already claimed. United States and Great Britain agreed in 1818 to occupy Oregon together. The British dominated it mostly until 1840. Califonia was a frontier province of Mexico. Not a lot of Mexicans wanted to live there but Califonia allowed foreign settlers to come. In the 1840s there was a lot of east-to-west trails made like the Oregon Trail, the California Trail, and the Santa Fe Trail. Indians later came and defended themselves because they thought it would effect their lives with all the traffic. They thought that the buffalo herds would die and a buffalo to them is their everything. The government made the Treaty of Fort Laramie for the Indians so that they would have peace. The Indians later picked out territories that they could claim forever. But white settlers would still provoke them hostility.
